Jesus in Shoe Leather
The rose-water and lavender portrayal of Jesus, which many artists exhibit, is far from the truth. "He became poor..." and the other clues of scripture place him exactly where you and I live. He got his hands dirty and wiped perspiration from his face.
Home furnishings in that humble Nazareth dwelling more than likely included a backless bench or two drawn up to the table for dining. Clothing? Mostly homemade with possibly a second hand, handed down garment from a friend. At 12 years of age, Jesus and the family went to Jerusalem--on foot, probably a three day journey. After this, Joseph, the carpenter and bread-winner, fades from the account--must have died before Jesus grew up. We may be sure that Jesus worked long hours in order to keep the home together. Mary's utmost confidence in him, clearly expressed at the wedding of Cana, tells us how she depended on him.
Just as concerned for our well-being today, Jesus walks and works with all who allow him to do so. He said, "I am with you always!" and beyond that, the promise of a home in heaven keeps us going.
