Mountain Peaks and Foothills

We may speak of hills and valleys
in the routine of this life.
Some hills may seem more like mountains
as to glory and/or strife.
And one valley may be fertile
where we reap some joys sublime,
while another deep and dismal
as a canyon carved by time.

Mountains loom out in the distance--
highest peaks first meet our gaze;
yet the foothills are much nearer,
hardly noticed in the haze.
But in progress, as we scale them,
we invariably lose sight
of the higher mounts envisioned,
hidden by the foothills' height.

Soon we learn that climbing foothills
calls for more than feeble strength;
and our patience, all too often,
is quite strained by journey's length.
But it still is gratifying
that the dream has been fulfilled
and we thrill in retrospection
when the mountain we have scaled.

Marriage is much like a foothill
where we climb by prayer and plan;
worthy venture--quite mysterious,
so ordained by God's own hand.
But a summit in the distance
beckons on to lofty goals,
spanning yet a few more valleys,
challenging the best of souls.

We may travel toward the summit
in companionship sublime;
but the journey's far from over,
there may be great tests, in time.
And the Captain of Salvation
bids us all His power employ,
there to hear His "Well done!" spoken,
and review our trek with joy.

Confess Whose Sins?

by Frank P. Nickel

Some of the most profound lessons of life have been transmitted to us by our black brothers and sisters, in the form of songs composed during the slavery days, such as this one:
You can talk about me all that you please.
I’ll talk about you down on my knees.
Complaining about people to people is gossip. Complaining about people to God, privately, is intercession. We cannot do both. If we expect God to listen, we cannot gossip. Our prayers will go no higher than the ceiling.

One of the most hideous sins in the eyes of God is confessing the other fellow’s sins while he’s listening, unless, of course, he has asked you to help him pray about a problem sin.

This principle is very important in a marriage. A husband and wife must pray together, if they expect to have God’s blessing on their marriage. But each will need to pray privately as well, in order to affect necessary changes in his or her mate.

Probably your husband (or wife) does things that “bug” you. In fact, you may at times feel like “crawling up a wall.” Well, go right ahead. You may find a hidden spot on the rooftop where you can pray for him or her.

Originally printed in “The Pepper-Upper,” a small handout containing quotes, quips, jokes, poems, scripture, and brief inspirational thoughts which Frank compiled on a weekly basis. He often carried several copies in his pocket to share with church members, neighbors, and folks he encountered while going about his daily business.

The Gem of My Heart

On this date, 75 years ago, God joined together Frank Nickel and Eva Jantz in marriage. In commemoration of that union, which brought our family to be, we remember their marriage and honor their memory.

Bless the Lord, I have found you, the gem of my heart
to cherish and hold you till death do us part.
Bless the Lord for His providence year after year
keeping each for the other, how precious, my dear.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul for this wonderful day.
Bless the Lord, oh my soul that He sent you my way.
Bless the Lord, who in wonderful grace did impart
such a precious companion, the gem of my heart.

Bless the Lord for your hand and the light in your eyes,
life's testing and toil shall but strengthen our ties.
With Christ as our captain, united we'll stand,
through joys and temptations, we'll go hand in hand.

Bless the Lord, oh my soul for this wonderful day.
Bless the Lord, oh my soul that He sent you my way.
Bless the Lord, who in wonderful grace did impart
such a precious companion, the gem of my heart.

Excerpt of chorus only:

Written for Eva Nickel by Frank P. Nickel, on the occasion of their 25th Wedding Anniversary, Oct. 4, 1967.  This was originally published as a song and was sung at each child's wedding. For a copy of the music, please contact Joyce.

The Compatible Marriage

Why is it that the TV shows,
with a wedding in their plot,
show us a woman after that
disgusted with her lot?
The road of romance usually leads
to where the two get tied;
it’s so much fun, until they do,
but then it’s war inside.

The only way it seems, is “out.”
“It simply could not work!”
But after that, if not before,
she’s found some other jerk.
It’s trial and error, once again—
“for better or for worse.”
What they don’t show is how much worse
for all who share the curse.

God has a plan and it is good,
which makes a marriage stick—
for fifty—sometimes sixty years,
as the wheels of fortune click.
I’m wondering friend, who writes those plays
with such a slanted view?
There are still a lot of true blue pals
who more than make it through.

Love Defined

Of all the things we talk about
one subject heads the list.
In tones profound, we speak this word
or often as we jest.
Let’s take a bit of time just now
attempting to define
just what LOVE means to you and me—
the natural and sublime.

The highest form of love revealed
by faith alone we share:
a cross upon a lonely hill—
our Savior dying there.
Our judgment past, our debt is gone,
our sins are all forgiven;
we now are fully justified
and know we’re bound for heaven.

And next, that love mysterious
where two become as one,
while sharing joys and trials till
the race of life is run.
And finally, a love that’s wide
which shares, then too, receives,
and seeks to be a friend in need—
in comradeship believes.

Our God is love; love is of God;
to dwell in God means love.
All purposes in life are vain
until God’s love we prove;
then ALL of earth’s relationships
will come to mean much more.
Our hearts can take the whole world in
through Christ, whom we adore.

This is the second poem with this title, the first was much longer, published as poem #28 in Contemporary Psalms. As is the prerogative of all poets, Frank edited the first version significantly, resulting in this more concise version. Sincerely Yours

I need a cozy kitten
and not a feisty cat;
I said I’d always love you,
and I still say that!
“For better or for worse”
whether skinny or fat;
so please, dear, let’s never ever
have another ugly spat!

Frank's humor surfaces in this short poem. As children, we witnessed the reality of human nature in their marriage, in "spats" yes, but also in a lifetime of faithful commitment. This photo was likely taken shortly after their October 1942 wedding. Upon Eva's death in 1996, they had been married over 53 years.

Parental Confession

It’s painful to admit, dear child,
this fact, most surely true,
that when you married, canceled was
our lease from God on you.

We didn’t make you—didn’t buy
components for your frame;
nor did we pour life’s blood in you
the moment that you came.

For twenty years or thereabouts,
we had the final say;
it wasn’t always right—agreed,
but God-ordained that way.

Your overall response was good;
we lived with love and trust.
We had determined, in our home,
Christ Jesus would be first.

Since you were wed, forgive us where
we’ve meddled—where we’ve failed,
and forced a choice upon you, which
you didn’t want—less hailed.

The longing to feel needed, child,
(our hearts with yours entwined),
our urge to help, at times, pushed us
beyond what God designed.

Our lack of grit and self-control
caused trauma—made you sad;
but please relive the fun days too
you shared with Mom and Dad!

Golden Wedding Reflections

Frank and Eva were married October 4, 1942. This photo would have been taken early in their marriage.

“Take the bitter with the sweet,” we often say.
We may not always see but we can pray
and trust the One who knows what lies ahead—
that He’ll supply our needs and daily bread.

So many things can happen which require
a stamina which takes us through the fire.
God’s all sufficient grace can see us through
and guide us in discerning what to do.

Our marriage bond—the mystery unique—
brings satisfaction, when God’s will we seek.
The routine duties, and the commonplace,
are much enhanced by walking in His grace.

What some would call a tragedy may well
turn into blessings we would never sell.
Such times reveal to us what really counts
and prove what friends can mean when trouble mounts.

Our bodies may wear down, as years go by
but faith can strengthen till the day we die.
More praise, less worrying and fears
as we mature throughout the passing years.

The fifty years of marriage don’t seem long.
While we have lived for God and shunned the wrong.
Then, too, we say, “The best is yet to come,”
when we will move into our final home!
